BOSKALIS – NINA
safe culture
Boskalis NINA
Back in 2009, Boskalis embraced the ambition of embedding safety as a core value in the DNA at all levels of its organization. What has been the company’s strategy for integrating this key issue since then?
In 2010, Boskalis introduced its own safety concept: NINA, an acronym for “No Injuries, No Accidents”. The concept is based on clearly defined values and behaviors that apply to everyone. Launched at all levels and in all parts of the organization and across all projects, NINA remained a permanent focus in subsequent years through daily NINA Moments, training courses, project kickoffs, and refreshers. From boardroom to operational staff, everyone has demonstrated commitment to upholding NINA standards. Every three years, new focal points are defined to further integrate safety within the organization. In recent years, a key focus area has been “safety leadership” through the concept of “the Expedition”: a process where a team or department works on making improvements while at the same time learning to amplify its own impact.
Ami’s Chris Wigboldus is involved in all NINA developments.
Ami has been involved in NINA from its inception in 2010, by sharing ideas and feedback and by participating in the implementation, development and provision of management training and organizing NINA kick-offs for projects and new organizational units. However, it especially involves being a long-term partner to Boskalis in order to promote a culture of safety across the organization. They helped establish and maintain the NINA movement, ensuring that this leads not only to traction but also to permanent growth and development. Based on a novel, modular approach, the NINA venture – developed in co-creation with Boskalis – is our most recent contribution. It combines learning from experience with tangible improvement measures. When it comes to safety and NINA, everyone’s a leader at Boskalis.
Pim van der Knaap
“Thanks to NINA, we no longer dodge the issue of unsafe situations. In fact, we confront it head-on and actively seek to avoid those types of situations. When it comes to NINA, I think we can all grasp that even individuals can sometimes make a difference that is life-changing. Yet at the same time, it’s a never-ending journey. There are challenges we encounter along the way that require us to stay on the ball. We need to be alert to how we can make a safe work environment an absolute priority in our day-to-day operations, which can sometimes be unpredictable.”
