Sterke Lekdijk innovation partnership
The Lekdijk between Amerongen and Schoonhoven is being reinforced along a length of 55 kilometers, divided into six projects. How can we harness these projects to innovate methods and techniques for dike reinforcement and ensure the entire dike reinforcement project is both feasible and affordable?
Reinforcing six dike trajectories and developing innovative new techniques that can be used widely across the Dutch market: it was this aspiration that led Hoogheemraadschap Stichtse Rijnlanden (Stichtse Rijnlanden Water Authority) to launch the Innovatiepartnerschap Sterke Lekdijk (Sterke Lekdijk Innovation Partnership) in the market and bring on board three contractors. The Lek Ensemble – comprised of Heijmans, GMB and DEME Environmental NL – is part of this alliance. The joint venture is involved in two dike engineering projects to be carried out over an 8-year period, paving the way for the application of innovations. They have partnered with two other companies: Mourik and Van Oord.
Ami’s Martijn Jong has been involved in the Lek joint venture tender since 2019 and helped launch the Innovation partnership.
Ami helped the Lek Ensemble set up the team and foster a winning culture. This included defining such a culture and identifying what specific actions were needed, as well as putting a the culture front and center in the partnership plan. The team assessment, which was prepared with a winning culture in mind, marked the official start of the collaboration with all partners once the contract was awarded. To kick-start this collaboration once the partners landed the contract, Ami helped establish the Sterke Lekdijk management team, as well as the Sterke Lekdijk program team and project team, and translated the win-win culture into a learning culture certain to make the partnership flourish.

“Applying innovations is essential for the affordable and sustainable realization of the Hoogwaterbeschermingsprogramma (High Water Protection Program). The cooperation within the Innovatiepartnerschap Sterke Lekdijk (Innovation Partnership Sterke Lekdijk) lays an important foundation for this. For example, we are achieving great results in the areas of product innovations, emission-free construction and new calculation techniques.”
